Learning Without Limits Curriculum

At Gorsefield Primary School, we believe that there should be no limits placed on what children can achieve. Our vision is simple yet ambitious: to inspire and challenge all children and adults to excel in everything they do. This belief is the driving force behind our Learning Without Limits Curriculum – a curriculum that has been carefully crafted to meet the needs, strengths and aspirations of our children, families and community.

The Learning Without Limits Curriculum is uniquely Gorsefield’s. While it fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum, many subjects have been fully designed and written specifically  which enables us to provide learning experiences that are meaningful, relevant and responsive to the lives of the children we serve at Gorsefield.

Our intent is clear: to remove the ceiling of low aspiration and capped ambition and replace it with challenge, richness and complexity. We believe our children are capable of far more than society sometimes expects of them. They can think deeply, tackle difficult concepts, embrace challenge and achieve excellence. Our curriculum reflects this unwavering belief.

Through the Learning Without Limits Curriculum, we aim to develop confident, knowledgeable and independent learners who possess the skills, character and resilience needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. We want our children to leave Gorsefield not only with strong academic foundations, but with the confidence to pursue their ambitions, overcome obstacles and make a positive difference in the world around them.

At the heart of our curriculum are three interconnected social strands:

  • Overcoming Barriers
  • Celebrating Individual Difference
  • Embracing Challenge

These strands embody our Gorsefield Values and are woven through every aspect of school life. Every lesson is connected to a Gorsefield Value and/or a UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Article, ensuring that children develop not only as learners but also as compassionate, responsible and respectful citizens.

We are proud to serve a community that faces significant challenges and high levels of deprivation. For this reason, our curriculum goes beyond academic achievement alone. It is designed to be relevant, personal and empowering, helping children understand themselves, value others and recognise their potential. The three social strands permeate everything we do, ensuring that every child is equipped to navigate an increasingly complex and demanding world with confidence, integrity and ambition.

The Learning Without Limits Curriculum is more than a curriculum; it is a commitment to our children. It is our promise that we will never place limits on their potential and that every day we will inspire, challenge and support them to excel in everything they do.

Learning Without Limits Academic Structure:

Text Rich:  We are committed to bridging the gap for children who may not have access to literature-rich environments beyond school. Carefully selected, engaging, current and age-appropriate texts underpin all areas of our curriculum, exposing children to a wide range of experiences, perspectives and ideas. Our progressive text spine is carefully matched to the knowledge, concepts and vocabulary taught across subjects, enabling children to deepen their understanding of the curriculum while developing a love of reading.

The vibrant and cohesive text spine reflects the diverse world in which our children live, incorporating contemporary themes and issues alongside international, cultural and classic literature. Through high-quality texts, children are encouraged to explore important challenges, celebrate diversity and develop empathy and understanding.

A text-rich curriculum is also central to our commitment to developing children's language and communication skills. By immersing children in rich vocabulary, ambitious language and meaningful discussion, we help to build the knowledge, confidence and literacy skills needed to access the wider curriculum, overcome barriers to learning and succeed both in school and beyond.

Vocabulary Rich:  Children join Gorsefield with a wide range of language experiences and starting points. As a result, developing language and vocabulary is a central priority within our Learning Without Limits curriculum. Alongside being text-rich, our curriculum is intentionally vocabulary rich, providing children with the words they need to understand the world, communicate effectively and succeed academically.

From Nursery to Year 6, we foster every aspect of language development through carefully planned opportunities to listen, speak, read and write. English sits at the heart of our curriculum because language is the foundation of learning. Through stories, discussion, reading and writing, children develop concepts, make connections between ideas and learn to express themselves with increasing confidence and precision. Language enables children not only to make sense of the world around them, but also to find and shape their place within it.

Across the curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on the explicit teaching of subject-specific Tier 3 vocabulary alongside the systematic development and rehearsal of high-utility Tier 2 vocabulary. Our carefully designed Gorsefield Vocabulary Programme focuses on the words with the greatest instructional value and widest application, ensuring that children continually build the language needed to access increasingly complex concepts and texts.

By the time children leave Gorsefield in Year 6, they will have developed a rich and expansive vocabulary that empowers them to read with greater understanding, communicate with confidence and articulate their ideas across a wide range of contexts. They leave us equipped not only for the next stage of their education, but also as articulate, informed and confident citizens.

To ensure vocabulary development is purposeful and progressive, we have mapped key vocabulary from Nursery to Year 6 across every subject and year group. This vocabulary is embedded within our knowledge organisers and learning journeys, supporting children to acquire, retain and apply knowledge over time. Through this carefully sequenced approach, vocabulary becomes a powerful vehicle for both learning and long-term understanding.

Knowledge Rich:  At the heart of our Learning Without Limits curriculum is a commitment to ensuring that every child develops a deep, secure and connected body of knowledge. We believe that knowledge matters because it provides the foundation upon which understanding, critical thinking, creativity and future learning are built.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children follow a clear and progressive journey of learning from their starting point through to the end of Year 6. We have precisely identified the essential knowledge that we want children to acquire, remember and apply at each stage of their education. This knowledge is clearly mapped through our medium-term plans, ensuring that learning is purposeful, coherent and progressive.

Each unit has carefully planned end points which define the knowledge children should know and understand by the end of their learning. This clarity enables teachers to build upon prior learning, revisit key concepts and make meaningful connections across the curriculum. As a result, children develop increasingly sophisticated schemas of knowledge rather than encountering isolated facts that are quickly forgotten.

Our knowledge-rich approach is rooted in a commitment to both equity and excellence. We believe that every child, regardless of background or starting point, deserves access to the powerful knowledge that will enable them to understand the world around them and participate fully within it. Through carefully planned progression, deliberate revisiting and meaningful connections, we ensure that knowledge is not simply taught but secured in long-term memory, empowering children to become confident, informed and successful learners

Connection Rich: At Gorsefield Primary School, we believe that learning becomes powerful when children can make meaningful connections between what they already know, what they are learning now and where their learning will take them next. Our Learning Without Limits curriculum is therefore deliberately connection rich, enabling children to know more, remember more and ultimately do more.

We understand that knowledge is not built through isolated facts or simply repeating the same information. It is built by making connections. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that new learning deliberately builds upon what has been taught before, allowing children to develop increasingly sophisticated schemas of knowledge. Teachers and subject leaders have a clear understanding of progression within their subjects and know how each piece of learning connects to previously taught content and prepares children for what comes next.

These connections are made explicit to children. Knowledge organisers, learning journeys and carefully sequenced curriculum plans help children to understand not only what they are learning, but how it connects to what they already know and why it matters for their future learning. Our curriculum schemata are continually scrutinised by subject leaders, departments and working groups to ensure that knowledge is genuinely connected, cumulative and purposeful.

For our children, this approach is particularly important. We serve a community where every learning opportunity matters. We do not have a second to waste. We cannot afford for learning to remain in the classroom temporarily, only to be forgotten when a unit ends. Our ambition is for knowledge to become part of children's long-term understanding, giving them an increasingly rich mental model of the world.

This is why prior learning is activated at the beginning of every lesson. Children are given regular opportunities to effortfully retrieve what they have previously learned, bringing knowledge from long-term memory back into working memory so that it can be connected to new learning. Staff have undertaken professional development linked to Willingham's Simple Model of Memory and use age-appropriate retrieval approaches to strengthen these connections.

Throughout lessons, teachers carefully structure learning so that children can successfully connect new ideas to existing knowledge. Worked examples, modelling, scaffolding, chunking and carefully considered resources are used to make complex learning accessible without reducing its challenge. As children's knowledge becomes increasingly secure, support is deliberately reduced so that they can retrieve, apply and connect their learning with increasing independence.

Assessment is therefore an essential part of making connections secure. Where children demonstrate gaps or misconceptions, these are identified and addressed rather than left uncorrected. Children receive targeted support to revisit, understand and reconnect the knowledge they have not yet secured. In this way, assessment is low stakes but high impact: it informs teaching, strengthens understanding and ensures that inaccurate connections do not become embedded.

Ultimately, our aim is for children to leave Gorsefield with a connected body of knowledge, rather than a collection of isolated facts. We want them to recognise patterns, make links, retrieve what they know, apply it in new contexts and use their knowledge to understand increasingly complex ideas.

At Gorsefield, learning is not about what children can remember for a test. It is about building a rich, connected body of knowledge that stays with them, grows with them and empowers them for whatever comes next.

Experience Rich:  At Gorsefield Primary School, we believe that children should not simply learn about the world; they should experience it. Our Learning Without Limits curriculum is therefore deliberately Experience Rich, creating meaningful connections between what children learn in school and the opportunities, experiences and possibilities that exist beyond the classroom.

We recognise that children do not all have equal access to opportunity outside of school. For some of our children, school may provide experiences that they would not otherwise encounter. This makes our commitment to an experience-rich curriculum particularly important. We carefully consider Poverty Proofing when planning opportunities, ensuring that financial circumstances do not become a barrier to participation and that every child can benefit from the experiences we provide.

Throughout a child's journey at Gorsefield, there is a carefully constructed programme of experiences directly connected to curriculum content. Every year group is expected to engage in at least two planned experiences each year, with opportunities selected to deepen knowledge, develop skills, broaden horizons and bring learning to life. Educational visits, visitors, workshops and other experiences are not simply additions to the curriculum; they are deliberately planned as part of it.

Our children also connect their learning with carefully selected key figures who exemplify the knowledge, values and experiences within our curriculum and embody the three social strands of Learning Without Limits: Overcoming Barriers, Celebrating Individual Difference and Embracing Challenge. These figures have been purposefully chosen to reflect the diverse and ever-changing community in which our children live, as well as the wider world they are part of.

‘If they can see it, they can be it.’

These connections help children to see possibility beyond their current circumstances. They provide role models whose lives, achievements, challenges and contributions can inspire children to imagine what they might achieve themselves.

Our commitment to experience extends beyond the traditional classroom and beyond the school day. At Gorsefield, we believe that everyone is a leader, regardless of age, role or title. This belief is reflected in our vision to ‘inspire and challenge all children and adults to excel in everything they do.’

Our leadership structure provides authentic opportunities for children and adults to work together as leaders through departments including Education; Health, Wellbeing and Safety; Rights and Justice; Sport; Environment and Transport; and Media and Culture. Our Little Leaders in EYFS and Key Stage 1, Young Leaders in Key Stage 2 and Staff Leaders work collaboratively to identify actions that reflect our school vision and respond to the needs of our school and wider community.

These departments provide a gateway for children to move from learning about change to contributing to change. They enable children to develop responsibility, agency and a sense of belonging within their community. For example, members of our Department of Environment work with the wider Radcliffe community to support efforts to address environmental issues within the town centre. Experiences such as these demonstrate to children that their voice, ideas and actions can make a genuine difference.

Our commitment to an experience-rich curriculum also continues beyond the school day. Through a wide range of clubs and activities, children have opportunities to develop their talents, practise their skills and revisit and extend learning from the classroom. GPS Rangers, our before- and after-school provision, is carefully connected to the knowledge and skills within our curriculum, providing further opportunities for children to rehearse, apply and revisit learning from previous lessons, terms and years.

In this way, the learning journey does not stop when the school day ends. Children's experiences beyond the classroom are recorded and connected to their learning journey, creating continuity between what happens during the school day and the opportunities available beyond it.

We believe that our commitment to education should extend to the whole family. Our curriculum therefore creates opportunities not only for children, but for parents, carers and families to learn alongside them. Our in-house community library is a self-funded resource available to families whose children learn through the Gorsefield Learning Without Limits curriculum. It enables families to access books linked to the themes and learning taking place in school, supporting conversations and learning at home and helping to create a culture of reading beyond the school day. Over time, the library has also become a resource for parents and carers to borrow books for their own enjoyment.

Families are invited to connect with learning in a range of other ways. Our PSHE, Art and Design, Design Technology and Science curricula have provided opportunities for families to engage directly with learning and develop their own knowledge and skills. Our Healthy Minds, Healthy Families mindfulness project, for example, enabled parents and carers to explore their own mental health and wellbeing while connecting with other members of our community. Families have also participated in a six-week first aid course, strengthening the work of our Department of Health, Wellbeing and Safety and extending this learning beyond the school gates.

For us, being Experience Rich means creating a curriculum where learning is lived, not simply taught. It means giving children opportunities to see, hear, question, create, explore, lead, contribute and discover. It means connecting classrooms with communities, knowledge with experience, children with families and aspiration with possibility.

At Gorsefield, we know that experiences can open doors. We are determined to ensure that every child has the opportunity to walk through them.

Learn Alongside

We also invite parents, carers, and wider family members to join us for our half-termly Learn Alongside events. These interactive sessions provide a unique opportunity to experience our curriculum first-hand through engaging presentations and model lessons. Families can learn alongside their children, gain valuable insight into classroom learning, and see our Learning Without Limits approach in action.

Here are 2 examples of out Learn Alongside Curriculum Presentations (we have held many, many more!)
