Mathematics
It has once again been a delight for our Maths Lead, Mrs Ellett, our class teachers and our children to share our learning with our incredibly supportive parents -this time with a focus on Power Maths. See below for more information about our mathematics curriculum.
New from September 2024 – Power Maths
Maths
Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.
Mathematics is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards Mathematics; an attitude that will stay with them to encourage enquiring minds, entrepreneurial thinking and economic wellbeing.
Power Maths
At Gorsefield Primary School, we use ‘Power Maths’ as the basis of our Maths curriculum. Power Maths is designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help nurture confidence in maths. Recommended by the DFE, it provides detailed guidance for the implementation of the National Curriculum for Mathematics – ‘fully delivering a mastery approach’. Power Maths promotes continuity and progression in the teaching of Mathematics across the whole school.
Power Maths breaks learning down into small steps, helping the children to see how learning from previous years or sessions, supports learning within new units and lessons. A concrete, pictorial abstract approach is used to support children’s understanding and enable them to solve increasing complex problems. Here is a presentation to show you what Power Maths looks like for your children and to explain why we choose it for our children: Power Maths for Parents
Lessons are structured to enable teachers to check for understanding and address misconceptions at the point of learning, providing immediate intervention where required. As part of the school day we also use a Same Day Intervention approach to ensure that children ‘keep up’ with the learning; providing targeted support to those who require additional scaffold to ‘strengthen’ their learning and to provide further opportunities for children who have a secure understanding to ‘deepen’ their learning through reasoning and problem solving.

Nursery
Mastering Number
We are part of the NCETM’s Mastering Number project to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future. Additional support, through Maths Fast Track Tutoring, will be put in place to ensure that all children are fluent in number by the end of KS1.
Times Tables Fluency
In years three and four we complete the Number Sense Maths Times Tables Fluency Programme. The highly visual, research informed programme provides the structure and depth to times tables teaching that children need to achieve fluency in essential multiplication and division facts and concepts. It is a true Mastery programme, designed to achieve fluency for every child without exception.
Times Tables Rock Stars
From Year 2 onwards, children become ‘rock stars’ as they compete to learn their times tables. The times tables are at the heart of a large proportion of the maths curriculum and rapid recall of the multiplication facts, gives the children the confidence and skills needed to problem solve with division, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratio, area…..the list goes on.
